Biography

Dr. John Machayi

Dr. John Machayi is a Fellow of the Zambia Institute of Banking and Financial Services (ZIBFS) and a Professional Member of the Zambia Monitoring and Evaluation Association. He holds a Doctorate in Business Administration from Binary University, an MBA from the Eastern and Southern African Management Institute/Maastricht School of Management, and a Bachelor’s Degree in Education (Geography) from the University of Zambia. He also has a Diploma in Bank Innovations and Strategies from the Galilee International Institute of Management and a Certificate in Digital Money from Tufts University. Additionally, he is a Certified Anti-Money Laundering Specialist.

With over 34 years of work experience, Dr. Machayi serves as a member of the Board for the National Institute for Scientific and Industrial Research, where he is the Board Vice Chair and Chair of the Finance and Investments Committee. He served as an elected Trustee on the Board of BancABC Staff Pension Fund.

Dr. Machayi has held several senior positions in the banking sector, including roles at Finance Bank and Atlas Mara such as Head of Central Processing, Head of Branch Operations, Head of Distribution & Partnerships, Assistant Director of Retail Banking, Acting Director of Audit, Risk and Compliance, and Branch Manager. His expertise encompasses banking operations, consumer banking, branch management, internal audit, risk and compliance, bank branch projects, bank branch mergers, and central operations.

He has also contributed to the banking industry through his service on the Bankers Association of Zambia Technical Committee, where he chaired the review of the Banking Code of Practice. Additionally, he participated in the Financial Sector Development Plan under the Bank of Zambia in the Financial Access, Banking, and Corporate Governance Working Groups.

Dr. Machayi has consulted for the Livestock Development and Animal Health Project and the Rural Finance Expansion Program. He also occasionally supervises postgraduate students, contributing to the academic and professional development of future leaders in the field.
