Our Student Loans

Although it is recognized that admission into University is not tied to the award of student loans, more than 90% of admitted students apply for Government support or sponsorship to enable them pursue their studies.

The Higher Education Loans and Scholarships Board (HELSB) was established by the Higher Education Loans and Scholarships Act No. 31 of 2016. HELSB replaced the Bursaries Committee which was established by Statutory Instrument No. 182 of 1973 of the Education Act CAP 134 of the Laws of Zambia. HELSB has taken over the administration of student loans and scholarships from the Bursaries Committee. Currently Student Loans are given to Undergraduate Students joining UNZA, CBU, KMU, MKU, MU, CHAU, KNU PU from secondary schools across the country. The loans cater for tuition fees, accommodation fees, meal allowances, book allowances and project allowances.

Loan Repayments

A beneficiary is expected to start paying back their student loan after the one year grace period elapses. This one year grace period starts after a beneficiary completes their studies. A beneficiary is expected to visit HELSB offices for enquires on the loan repayment process and terms of repayment.
